As the Giro de Portugal has shown throughout this year and others, the FNE highlights today that it has received “several reports of indiscipline and violence occurring in and around schools”.
According to the organization, in addition to the fact that students are victims, there is “(…) a lack of protection of professionals and a lack of effective responses from the competent authorities.”
The column recalls that Brazilians are insisting on more policing in schools after Brazilian student José, then aged 9, suffered the mutilation of part of the fingers of his left hand following violence in a public school.
“A primary school located in a peripheral area of the country recently experienced a serious episode which highlights structural problems which persist in other establishments,” indicates the FNE.
The Federation revealed that the persistence of indiscipline and aggression in a school endangers the safety of teaching staff.
“The situation reached a level of extreme seriousness when the members of the student’s family, after being informed, uttered serious insults and threats against the teacher, including threats to physical integrity,” reports the FNE, which continues:
“The intervention of law enforcement authorities was requested to ensure the safe exit of the teacher, and it was reported that there were no means available. The group’s management decided to temporarily close the establishment the following day due to the lack of security.”
The teacher, according to the FNE, temporarily stopped teaching out of fear for her safety. “It is important to emphasize that this case is not isolated,” stressed the FNE.
The FNE stressed that it demands immediate responses and measures from the Ministry of Education:
“(…) considers it urgent that the Ministry of Education, town halls and security forces recognize the seriousness of this reality and adopt measures guaranteeing safety and working conditions.”
Contacted by Portugal Giro, the Ministry of Education did not respond.
