Volodimir Zelensky wants to meet Donald Trump in the coming days. This is how the Ukrainian president announced this arrival on his social networks. Zelensky wants to speak with the US leader at a time to be determined on the first day of 2026. The aim of this meeting, which would be the fifth time the representatives have met this year, is to try to agree on the final peace proposal that must be formulated in Russia.
“We did not miss a single day. We agreed on an upcoming meeting at the highest level with President Trump. Many things can be decided in the New Year,” Zelenskiy wrote. On the table is Trump’s peace plan to end the war in Ukraine. This document, consisting of 20 points, discusses the American team with the Ukrainian and Russian sides. The diplomatic efforts are being led by Steve Witkoff, Trump’s right-hand man, and the president’s proxy, Jared Kushner. The main meeting place for the negotiating teams is Miami.
The announcement of the next possible quote between Zelensky and Trump came after the two presidents spoke by telephone last July. Kushner and Witkoff also took part in the conversation. “We are really working 24/7 to bring closer to the end of this brutal war of Russia against Ukraine and to make sure that all documents and all measures are realistic, effective and safe,” Zelensky said in the telephone interview.
Ukraine and the United States reached consensus on 18 of the 20 points of the peace plan. There are only two that fail. The first is the one that plans the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the 25% that it controls in the province of Donetsk. Washington is demanding that this portion of territory still under Ukrainian domination be a demilitarized zone. kyiv responds that the Russians must demilitarize territory equivalent to occupied Donetsk. Casa Blanca does not clearly have this proposal because it considers that it hinders the agreement.

The other point on which there is no consensus between Ukraine and the United States, as detailed by Martes Zelenski, is the future of the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant. Trump is proposing that Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, currently under Russian occupation, be managed by the United States and with the possible participation of its enemies. The energy allocation would go to the occupier and the other half would go to Ukraine. Zelensky demands that his state company Energoatom and the Americans take control.
The Russian newspaper Kommersant It was reported this week that Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, explained in a recent meeting with businessmen that his emissaries were negotiating exactly the opposite, namely that the Zaporiyia factory was run solely by the Russians and the United States.
Possible Russian pick-up
Russia has sent few warnings about whether it will accept the peace plan being considered by Ukraine and the United States. Moscow considers that the entire Donbass must be under its control and without the Ukrainian military presence. Donbass is the region formed by the provinces of Donetsk and Lugansk. The latter is almost entirely taken over by Russia. The Kremlin has indicated that it only wants to freeze the war front in the provinces of Jerón and Zaporiyia. And that it can withdraw from the small parts it occupied in the provinces of Járkov, Sumi and Dnipropetrovsk. His troops continue to advance, albeit very slowly, in these three regions.
Zelensky warned that any agreement with Russia on Ukraine’s sovereign territory must be ratified by its citizens in a referendum. The Ukrainian president announced that another essential condition for concluding a pact with Russia is that Western allies guarantee protection and security measures equivalent to those of a NATO member country.
