Pension spending in Spain is increasing every year, due to increasing demographic pressure from the aging population. According to data provided today by Social Security, the total amount spent on contributory pensions amounts to 189.598 million euros in 2025, which represents a gain of 6.2% compared to the 178.5 billion spent in 2024 and 13.1% compared to 2023, where 168.000 million were allocated.

This match’s growing pressure on public spending is linked to the jubilation of the poorest generation baby boomthe low Spanish birth rate and the greater number of benefits for those now entering retirement. According to European Commission projections, Spain will be the OECD country that will devote the largest proportion of its GDP to paying pensions in 2050, i.e. 16.8%.
The latest data published by Social Security corresponds to a quarterly note, in which 13.750 million euros were paid, or 5.98% more than the last month of 2024.

The system allocated an additional 1,715.7 million euros in November (latest date available) to passive classes, or 6.4% more than a year earlier. These pensions are those that correspond to military and civilian personnel of the Administración General del Estado, Administración de Justicia, Cortes Generales and other constitutional or state bodies, as well as employees transferred to the autonomous communities.
In total, according to an EFE calculation, pension spending exceeded 200 billion euros in 2025, with 189,598 million spent on contributory pensions, to which are added an additional 20,129 million paid between the year and November for passive classes. Last year, total pension expenditure (contributory and passive classes, for the whole year) reached 200.738 million euros, a figure already exceeded even if we do not yet have the complete picture of the year.
Last month’s rating still does not reflect the reassessment announced for the coming year. This will be 2.7% for the majority of retirees, and between 7% and 11.4% for those who welcome the most vulnerable retirees. In total, according to calculations by the Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Económicas, the average increase in the system will be 3.44%.
According to the latest data provided by Social Security, the average pension amounts to 1,317 euros gross per month divided into 14 payments.
