With high temperatures in Rio reaching over 40°C this week, the waterfront is a refuge for many locals and tourists, who come to spend the end of year festivities in the city. Those who have visited the beaches of the southern zone in the last three days, especially in the area between Leblon and Urca, have noticed dark spots in the sea, which attract the attention of bathers. Black spots, seen from a distance, look like oil or sewage spills, but are not signs of pollution. According to the National Environment Institute (INEA), these are schools of fish that swim near the surface.

The agency reported that in recent days several reports about the phenomenon have been published on social media. This is the case of the influencer Júlia Sette, who, after exercising, decided to fall into the sea at Praia Vermelha, in Urca, and found herself among thousands of small fish.
Contrary to what it seems at first glance, if confused with dirt, the visibility of animals is, in reality, a good sign for those who like to swim in the sea: Inea has attributed this appearance, and that of other marine species, to the gradual improvement in water quality, resulting from sanitation works and environmental monitoring.
– Two weeks ago a similar phenomenon occurred on the Barra seafront. It must probably be a majubas cadurme. – said biologist Mário Moscatelli
