The Minister of Labor Antonio Sanguino registered the Committee for the Promotion of the National Constituent Assembly in the National Civil Registry, which President Gustavo Petro promoted for months at public events and on social networks, despite criticism on the matter.
According to the head of department, this mechanism will serve to bring about changes that the government wanted to achieve through its social reforms; Some of them did not succeed in the Congress of the Republic, as they were seen by some legislators as problematic for the country.

“The scenario that can enable these changes and reforms is a Constituent Assembly that represents the sovereign voicethe constituent power of the citizens. “The national government and the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, are of the opinion that this citizens’ initiative deserves all support,” the minister told the press as he left the registry office.
Sanguino reported that the support of more than three million signatures is required, which is why, as he explained, the gathering is sponsored by the country’s social leaders. The idea is that the next Congress, elected in March 2026, will consider the initiative.
“A Constituent or Pre-Constituent Congress considers and gives free rein to the convocation of the Colombian people to a national Constituent Assembly.. “From today, with the submission of this initiative and the registration of this nine-member committee, the process of collecting signatures begins,” he explained.
