Former President Jair Bolsonaro’s medical team explained this Saturday 27 the details of the procedure adopted to try to control hiccups. Hospitalized since December 24, Bolsonaro suffered a phrenic nerve block this afternoon and, according to the team, is awake and under observation.
Initially, professionals chose to intensify the use of medications, seeking a clinical response without intervention. This strategy, however, did not have the desired effect. According to cardiologist Brasil Caiado, the situation worsened the day before.
“Yesterday he had very prolonged hiccups, even more severe, which prevented him from sleeping, and he woke up exhausted,” explained the cardiologist.
Faced with the worsening, the team decided to continue the intervention, taking advantage of the hospitalization period already planned until the beginning of next week. The intervention was to take place in stages.
“As we were scheduled until Monday, today we called the team that carries out the intervention and opted for the intervention. Let’s wait for a response. Today it was done on the right side and on Monday we will do it on the left side,” he explained.
Interventional radiologist Mateus Saldanha reported that the technique was applied successfully and without complications, emphasizing that the block is not performed simultaneously on both sides for safety reasons.
The medical team expects a hospitalization of between five and seven days. According to Doctor Birolini, if the clinical evolution is positive after the next stage, Bolsonaro could be released on Wednesday.
“We will do the least invasive thing and reassess periodically. If we get to a point where there is no solution, we will discuss again and see the best possible path forward,” Birolini said.
