After a very difficult time in which he was in intensive care for nine months due to a traffic accident, Roly Serrano He can finish 2025 almost completely recovered as he still has a few months of rehabilitation ahead of him. In dialogue with THE NATIONthe actor talks about the upcoming season Carlos Pazwhere it premieres on December 25th Call off the weddingAt the Teatro Candilejas 1, he reflects on the insights that misfortune has left him and talks about his new love, which is so important for his recovery.
-Your life is a novel… You lived on the streets, were reunited with your family after a long time and had an accident almost two years ago that put you in a coma. They have impressive resilience.
-It’s true, but I don’t want to talk about it anymore. Everyone knows that I was a beaten child and left home, or as I think ideologically… I have told it many times. What stands out there is resilience. You also know that two seasons ago, when I was returning from Córdoba, I had an accident on the road near Baradero. With Call off the wedding I return to Cordoba, this time to Carlos Paz.
-Have you worked with Nazarena Vélez, who stars in and produces the comedy?
-I have a novel called 1-5/18and Nazarena played my ex-wife in some episodes. They were very funny scenes, very beautiful. We didn’t form a great friendship, but we had a good vibe. I’m just getting to know her and she seems like a wonderful, charming person. As well as his daughter Barbie Vélez and her partner Santiago Camaño, who are also involved in the work. I think they are very nice people, I like them. I feel very cared for and they make me part of their family. In fact, the company is family-owned, as Barbie’s husband Lucas Rodríguez, who serves as producer, also works. Call off the wedding This was already done last year in Carlos Paz, with great success. The premiere will take place on December 25th at Candilejas 1. It is the story of a couple who made the mistake of getting married. She goes to a wizard, the very funny character I play, and he tells her that they need to go back in time to change some things and regain the love and family they lost. And I also do the latest features of Yepetoand the idea is to come back next year because it is a beautiful work that I have always dreamed of.
-In Call off the weddingSo they go back in time to change things. If you could do that, what would you change about your life?
-I would change some things. I would bring more responsibility into my life. I was a street kid who survived and discovered that I was, in many ways, incredibly self-taught and picked things up with great ease. For example, I never learned guitar, but they gave me a guitar, they told me to put my finger here and play, and within an hour I could sing. Everything like that. It didn’t cost me anything. Somehow he got what he wanted. This loneliness turned me into a survival expert and in seduction… I have seduced absolutely everyone so that they would accept me, that they would love me. There was a family who loved me and I was friends with the eldest son. And one day I was staying at the house and then they kept inviting me back. I lived on the street and my parents told me: “Roly, come sleep at home, eat here.” Little by little I became part of the family. And one day this friend told me, “Hey, crazy guy, stop puffing up and stop coming to my house, because because of you, things change. Because you get up and you make your bed. You eat breakfast, you wash your cup and your things. And they ask us to do the same.”
-Did you have to go?
-No no. But I want to say that it didn’t cost me anything. I started doing theater without having studied. I went on stage without having seen any theater. That’s why I love my job so much. Because it was the first thing that made me realize that acting is not just about going on stage and saying words, but that it requires preparation. I had to study to develop my intellect. Because the more my intellect grew, the richer my characters became.
– You took responsibility back then…
-But I lost 20 twenty years. I saved myself several times. I stopped smoking almost two years ago now. I haven’t smoked since the accident. I was treated in the intensive care unit for six months and spent the entire period of abstinence like this; and it’s the most messed up part. When I first left the clinic, they took me to a study site and I smelled like cigarettes, but I didn’t like it.
-What memories do you have of those months in the hospital?
-I don’t have many memories because I was in a coma for three months and in intensive care for another six months, sleeping most of the time. But I became aware of things. What happened to me gave me lessons.
-What is that?
-I realized how many things I missed due to stupid things, saying I didn’t have time… Even talking to a friend in a cafe, petting a cat, talking on the phone with family. Now I give myself a lot more time for everything. My family supported me a lot, as did my friends. And the people who are always so nice to me and tell me: “I was thinking about you” or “I was praying for you.”
-Are you still in rehabilitation?
-I am still in rehabilitation because I have no strength in my legs and my knees hurt a lot. It’s slow, they told me. But we’re fine.
-After so many months in the dark, it must be exciting to get back on stage.
-Very exciting, especially with Yepeto because it is a job I dreamed of. And my dream is fulfilled. It came to me as a mature actor, with a path, with a journey.
-Have you ever said that you lost 22 kilos during the pandemic and then gained some weight? Do you pay attention to your diet?
-Every time Dr. Cormillot sees me, he asks me to go to his clinic. And I was in his clinic, I lost weight and it’s true that I gained it back, but I was never obese. I understand that for health reasons I still have extra kilos and need to lose them.
-Are you in a relationship?
-Yes, I’m in love. Cande is a sun. She is an actress, a theater graduate, an author, she sings, she is a producer. We met in Cordoba when I was there Roland.
-Before the accident…
-Yes, before. We were just starting and the accident happened. When I left the sanatorium, he came here to take care of me. He came for a week and stayed. And it was very important for my recovery. It is a beautiful love that breaks many prejudices and that I want to work for. I won’t reveal any more.
– You had beautiful loves in your life…
-I have had extraordinary women. Yes, I was very lucky in that respect. And now God rewards me with this magical creature that is La Córdoba because that’s what everyone calls it (laughs). The love with which he does everything he does for me! I feel like the king. To be honest, I thought I would never fall in love again. He had thrown down the gauntlet (long pause). I have suffered a lot of loss in my life and out of fear of experiencing it again, I didn’t give in. I would never have been able to start a family that way. And with Claudia (he was his partner for many years, he died in 2004 and Roly adopted his son Dante) it was the first time that I gave myself and started a family. Her loss was extremely painful. It destroyed me.
-It was hard for you to recover.
-Much…
-And when you became brave, you met La Córdoba…
-Yes. I thought, if there is even a way to live this fullness again, I will choose to live it and not give in to fear.
