The final of the Apertura football tournament in Guatemala, played this Saturday, ended in widespread confusion at the Manuel Felipe Carrera stadium in the country’s capital. Despite losing 1-0 to Municipal, Antigua won the title thanks to the advantage gained in the first match, but the decision was marred by serious incidents on the field after the final whistle.

So far, authorities responsible for stadium security have not said whether anyone was arrested or injured following the riots. The confusion began shortly after the match ended, when fans invaded the pitch and clashes involved players from both teams.
Footage shown on local TV show Municipal athletes chasing Antigua players and throwing objects, which quickly evolved into physical attacks between members of the two clubs. Amid the chaos, municipal supporters also attacked the police with kicks. After several minutes, security forces managed to contain the unrest.

The President of Antigua, Manolo Callen, condemned the events and described the episode as “unacceptable”.

In the first match of the final, played on December 21, Antigua beat Municipal 2-0. With an overall result of 2-1, the team confirmed the Guatemalan football title and received the trophy at the end of the decision, despite the tense atmosphere that marked the end of the match.
