
For more than four years, a British woman lived a lie worthy of a TV series, even managing to cheat on her boyfriend. Laura McPherson, 35, pretended to have terminal cancer to raise awareness for her partner, John Leonard, 44, and get him to pay for silicone implant surgery, which is supposedly necessary after a mastectomy.

The hoax was extremely elaborate: Laura even took photos in a hospital bed, wearing clothes bearing the slogan “Breast Cancer Support”, to convince her boyfriend she was undergoing treatment. In its testimony, the British court described the scheme as “cruel and calculated.”
During the years he was deceived, John spent around £25,000 (about R$178,000) on supposed medical treatments and illness-related expenses. In one of the most surreal moments, he presented Laura with a 30,000-pound Rolex (about R$214,000) to celebrate his cancer “cure.”
According to the British press, Laura said that she suffered from multiple types of cancer, including breast, cervical, ovarian, and intestinal cancer. She even let her daughter think she was dying.
