Residents of the capital São Paulo could start to feel a change in the weather starting this Sunday evening (28). After a period of extreme heat, the last days of December are expected to be rainy and with a risk of flooding this Monday (29).
São Paulo residents should be alert for lightning, wind gusts above 50 km/h and even hail in isolated locations, according to the CGE (Emergency Management Center) of the city of São Paulo. On Sunday afternoon, rain spread to the north of the capital and to municipalities like Guarulhos.
Among the consequences expected by the municipality are the fall of trees and power outages. Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) has also issued a warning about the potential risk of storms for the entire state. Paraná and much of Santa Catarina are included in the warning.
The entry of the sea breeze from the far south of the city, combined with the warm and humid air mass, is expected to cause rain clusters of moderate to heavy intensity. The warm air mass is expected to gradually lose strength, paving the way for instability systems that will affect the entire Greater São Paulo, according to the CGE.
This Monday, the morning will have cloudy skies and thermometers at 22°C. Dawn will be sunny, with variable cloudiness and the chance of isolated light rain showers.
During the afternoon, heavy rain is forecast, with the potential for falling trees, flooding and rising river and stream levels. The maximum temperature must reach 31°C.
Tuesday (30) it is still hot, but with temperatures lower than those recorded in previous days. The maximum expected temperature is 29°C.
From the afternoon onwards, heavy rain showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, occasional gusts of wind and the potential for hail. We warn of the possibility of the formation of impassable floods, significant elevations of streams and rivers, as well as falling trees.
The capital of São Paulo reached this Sunday afternoon its highest temperature of the year and also the hottest day ever recorded in a month of December since measurements began in 1943. The conventional meteorological station of Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) in Mirante de Santana (northern zone) showed 36.3°C at 3 p.m.
This new mark was recorded two days after the capital São Paulo set the previous record for the month, on Friday (26), with 36.1°C. Before that, the highest temperature in December was measured on December 3, 1961, with 35.6°C.
The heatwave increased water consumption by 60% this week in the state of São Paulo. With demand increasing, the reservoirs that supply Greater São Paulo are operating at only 26% of their total capacity, according to the São Paulo government.
