United States President Donald Trump said at a press conference this Sunday (12/28), alongside Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, that Russia should play an active role in rebuilding the country after a possible peace deal.
According to the President of the United States, the subject was raised directly during a recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“They will help. Russia will help. Russia wants to see Ukraine prosper,” Trump said when asked about Moscow’s responsibility after the war.
According to the Republican, Putin has demonstrated his willingness to collaborate in Ukraine’s recovery, in particular by providing electricity and other inputs at reduced prices after the end of the conflict. “It may sound strange, but President Putin has been very generous about Ukraine’s success,” he said.
Trump also said that rebuilding issues have already been discussed for about two weeks by members of his team, including Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and Marco Rubio.

The statement came after a two-hour meeting between Trump and Zelensky held at Mar-a-Lago, the Republican’s private club in Palm Beach, Florida. According to Trump, negotiations for a ceasefire with Russia are about 95% progress.
During the meeting, the two leaders also spoke by telephone with representatives of the European Union about the latest peace proposal. The Republican called the meeting “excellent” and said an agreement could be reached in the coming weeks, while avoiding setting deadlines.
“If everything goes well, peace in Ukraine can be established in a few weeks. If everything goes badly, nothing will happen,” he said. The American president, however, acknowledged that the negotiations could still fail.
Despite his optimism, Trump admitted that issues considered sensitive remained under discussion. Among them, the situation in the Donbass region, classified by the Republican as “very complex”, although close to a solution.
According to him, Ukraine must decide on the final terms of the agreement by referendum or with the approval of Parliament. Trump said he believed Ukraine’s people supported ending the war and said Zelensky had authorized popular consultations on parts of the peace plan.
