The opposition called a press conference in the Chamber of Deputies this Monday (29/12) to insist in favor of the dismissal of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court, Alexandre de Moraes (STF). The movement is led by the new opposition leader, MP Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB).
This move marks an interruption of the parliamentary recess, which officially began on December 23 and will continue until February. The last activity of the Congress was the approval of the Budget on February 19.
The chief told the Metropolises that the summoning of right-wing parliamentarians to Brasilia during the holidays aims to exert political pressure on the Supreme Court, because, according to him, “no one can support” the magistrate anymore.
According to the report, the presence of 16 deputies and senators is expected. The request mentioned by Gilberto was filed last Tuesday (12/23) by Senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF).
The opposition offensive took place after Moraes’ controversies regarding Banco Master
- Opposition plans to interrupt recess to push for impeachment demand against STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes;
- The offensive widened after the publication of an article in the newspaper O Globo on Moraes’ alleged pressure on the president of the BC, Gabriel Galípolo;
- Moraes denies this and has already published three different notes to try to clarify the matter.
The DF parliamentarian accuses Moraes of “administrative advocacy” after allegedly asking the president of the Central Bank (BC), Gabriel Galípolo, to intercede in favor of Banco Master, owned by Daniel Vorcaro. Moraes claimed, in his notes, that the problem with Galípolo was the Magnitsky Act and that he had not addressed the Master’s situation.
The new impeachment request must be addressed to the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP). In Casa Alta, Moraes has more than 80 such performances, but none are in progress.
Understanding Moraes’ controversies with Banco Master
Journalist Malu Gaspar, from the newspaper The globepublished a report reporting an alleged meeting between Moraes and Galípolo to ask the Central Bank to authorize the purchase of Banco Master by the state bank of Brasilia, BRB.
After the affair was revealed, Moraes even published three notes to try to clarify the meetings with Galípolo. In one of them it is said that they both discussed the Magnitsky Act.
Application for ICC and indictment
After the fallout from the affair, Senator Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE) announced that he would collect signatures for the opening of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate the controversies.
“After the break, I will collect signatures to investigate the news of a contract between Banco Master and the family office of Minister Moraes, worth 129 million reais, outside of legal norms, in addition to this news of the minister’s direct action in favor of the bank,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In the House, Novo leader Marcel Van Hattem (RS) announced the collection of signatures for a new impeachment request against Moraes.
“In view of the new revelations that the Minister of STF exercised administrative law with the Central Bank in favor of Banco Master, with which his wife Viviane Barci de Moraes has a contract worth almost 130 million reais, our responsibility as inspectors of public authorities is inescapable,” he wrote.
