The doctors of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) have planned a new intervention for this Monday (12/29). The goal is to block the left phrenic nerve to try to contain the hiccups. He has been admitted to the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia (DF), since Christmas Eve, and is recovering from surgery performed on 25/12 to treat bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy.
Given the persistence of the hiccups and the new procedures performed in addition to the surgery, it is expected that Bolsonaro will spend New Year’s Eve in the hospital. The possibility of a new medical intervention was announced on Saturday (27/12), after he suffered an anesthetic blockade of the same nerve, but on the right side. While the symptoms persisted, doctors confirmed that the new procedure had been carried out this Monday, in a bulletin released this Sunday afternoon.
“Tomorrow (Monday 29) it is planned to complete the treatment, with a block of the left phrenic nerve, for further evaluation of the results. The patient must continue physiotherapy for rehabilitation, venous thrombosis prophylaxis measures and clinical care. Bolsonaro is undergoing a new procedure and will spend New Year’s Eve hospitalized,” says an excerpt from the bulletin.
Recurring hiccups
- Jair Bolsonaro has been suffering from hiccups, according to his family, for at least 9 months.
- In July, the former president announced that he would be on “absolute rest” for the entire month, in addition to suspending his political agenda due to the setbacks.
- The decision was made under the guidance of the medical team who also took into account a series of health issues.
- In the last public events he attended, before his arrest, Bolsonaro reiterated that his health problems were linked to the stabbing he received during the 2018 election campaign.

In a social media protest, former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL) asked for prayers and reported that her husband did not make it through the night, due to another bout of hiccups.
“Yesterday the anesthesia of the right phrenic nerve was performed and that of the left side is scheduled for Monday. Jair did not have a good night’s sleep; he had new hiccups which started around 11 p.m. and continued until 11:20 a.m., without interruption, which caused him great exhaustion and an increase in blood pressure,” she wrote.

A medical bulletin updates Bolsonaro’s state of health this Sunday
Procedure
Phrenic nerve block is a radiointervention procedure, with application of anesthesia. The effect of the anesthetic lasts from 12 hours to 18 hours, according to doctors. After the intervention, Bolsonaro will be hospitalized for observation and monitoring of the evolution of the disease.
The former president was hospitalized with the authorization of Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes to undergo surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia. This release was based on an examination carried out by the Federal Police (PF), at the request of the former president’s defense. The hospital’s medical team said the operation went as planned.
Prison
Bolsonaro was under house arrest from August 4 this year until November 21. However, after attempting to violate the electronic ankle monitor, Moraes ordered the former president to perform preventive detention at the Regional Superintendence of the Federal Police, in Brasilia.
On November 25, the STF ruled that the former president and other Core 1 defendants in the coup plot were final and without appeal (while there is no longer any possibility of appeal). Since then, he has served the sentence to which he was sentenced: 27 years and 3 months in prison.
Bolsonaro was considered the leader of the criminal organization that orchestrated the attack on democracy and was convicted of the following crimes: armed criminal organization, attempted abolition of the democratic state, coup d’état, qualified damage by violence and serious threat to Union property and damage to listed property.
