MADRID, December 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Ministry of Finance published this Monday the list of localities and postal codes corresponding to Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories which cannot benefit from the preferential tariff treatment provided for in the trade agreement between the European Union and Israel.
The list is made up of more than a thousand settlements and postal codes from which no products can be imported in response to the “genocide in Gaza” and in “support of the Palestinian population.”
The trade agreement between the EU and Israel has been in force since 2000 and establishes a free trade zone, allowing preferential and duty-free access to many products.
However, due to the humanitarian crisis caused by the Israeli response to the attacks of October 7, 2023 – these attacks have already left more than 71,000 dead and 171,000 injured – several EU member states, including Spain, have requested a review of the agreement by appealing to its Article 2.
According to this article, “the relations between the parties, as well as all the provisions of the agreement itself, will be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles.” This area, he continues, “constitutes a fundamental element of this agreement”.
