The death of Brigitte Bardot, at the age of 91, has reignited a debate that has followed the name of the French actress for years: after all, where has the fortune built by one of the greatest stars of European cinema gone? An absolute icon of the 1950s and 1960s, Bardot chose an unusual path for all the money she accumulated.
After having definitively abandoned cinema in the early 1970s, Brigitte Bardot began to devote her life to the defense of animal rights. The change was not just symbolic. A large part of the profits from films, advertising contracts and image rights have been devoted to maintaining the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, created in 1986 and considered one of the most influential in Europe in the sector.

It’s the animal!
The actress Brigitte Bardot was a fervent animal rights activist.
According to biographer Yves Bigot, who closely followed the artist’s trajectory, Bardot’s relationship with the foundation was so intense that she even compromised her personal assets to guarantee the continuity of the projects. In times of financial difficulty, the actress mortgaged La Madrague, her home in Saint-Tropez, to support rescues, shelters and international campaigns.

Additionally, Bardot forewent items with emotional and historical value. Over the years, she held charity auctions where she sold items such as the dress worn at her wedding and jewelry acquired during her stay in Brazil between 1964 and 1965. All the money raised was donated to animal causes.
This extreme commitment directly impacts the volume of the inheritance left to the only son, Nicolas Charrier. According to Bigot, her remaining financial assets are limited, a direct result of the actress’s decision to prioritize activism over asset accumulation.
