
A story of affection, dedication and learning in Santa Catarina moves those who know the routine of Pedro Donato, 91, and his great-granddaughter Brenda Schiavo, 11. Inside Águas Frias, the elderly man resumed his studies with the help of the young girl, who took on the role of teacher within her own family.

Every day, after lunch, Brenda walks about five minutes to her great-grandfather’s house. There they sit down, exchange notebooks and begin the lesson. The initiative began in 2022 and has since become part of their routine.
— I gathered the family together and asked them if they would accept my idea. Everyone supported. Then I came to talk to him, I asked him if he would agree to study with me and he agreed. I’m happy to see him learning, says Brenda.
What started as a joke quickly became something serious. Classes follow a schedule organized by the student herself, with different subjects each day. These include Portuguese, mathematics, history, geography, English, science, arts and even physical education, adapted to the age of the student.

— We can’t run in physical education, can we? Because he is 91 years old. But we do light exercises, games and games, explains the mini-teacher.
In addition to basic literacy and math, Pedro is also learning how to deal with technology. With patience, Brenda teaches her great-grandfather how to use his cell phone, write messages and understand the device’s simple functions.
Without having had the opportunity to study when he was young, because of his work, Pedro now writes down everything he learns. He told NSC TV that classes are a way to learn, have fun and occupy time.
— It also serves to entertain. We hang out and enjoy life a little. There are things we understand, there are things we don’t understand. Things are very different today, he said cheerfully. —And the professor is demanding. A little nervous sometimes – she jokes.
