“Avatar: Fire and Ashes,” the new James Cameron film, easily dominated the box office over the Christmas long weekend. The production grossed US$88 million (R$488 million) in four days, including US$64 million (R$355 million) between Friday and Sunday alone, remaining at the top of cinemas during the peak holiday season.

Although it lags behind the performance of the franchise’s previous film in the same screening period, “Fire and Ashes” remains a commercial success. In the international market, the film added another $181.2 million (1 billion reais) over the weekend, bringing worldwide revenue to $760.4 million (4.21 billion reais) through Sunday. Of this total, 217.7 million US dollars (1.21 billion reais) came from the United States, while abroad accounted for 542.7 million US dollars (3 billion reais).
With a week until the holiday season officially ends, the industry expects the film to hit the $1 billion mark in global box office sales by next weekend. If this is confirmed, Disney will focus on the only three 2025 films that have exceeded this level, alongside “Lilo & Stitch” and “Zootopia 2”.
Even five weeks after its premiere, “Zootopia 2” remains in the spotlight on the international circuit. The film remained at the top of the Christmas box office and surpassed the $561 million (3.1 billion reais) mark on Sunday in China alone, accumulating a worldwide total of $1.42 billion (7.87 billion reais). “Avatar: Fire and Ashes” also has an impressive performance in the Chinese market.
The main holiday surprise was “Marty Supreme,” an A24 period production directed by Josh Safdie and starring Timothée Chalamet. The film grossed $27.1 million (150 million reais) in its first four days, recording the best debut in the independent studio’s history. Considering only the period from Friday to Sunday, the film grossed $17.5 million (97 million reais), placing it third in the weekend rankings. With an estimated budget of between 60 and 70 million US dollars (between 332 and 388 million reais), it is the most expensive film ever produced by A24.
In fourth place is “Anaconda,” which debuted with US$23.6 million (R$131 million) over a four-day period in the United States, despite negative reception from critics. The film was nearly surpassed by “The Maid,” a Sony thriller directed by Paul Feig, which grossed US$23.1 million (R$128 million) in the same period, higher than initial projections, supported by an estimated budget of US$36 million (R$199 million). Considering only the traditional three-day weekend, “The Maid” surpassed “Anaconda”, with 14.9 million dollars (82.5 million reais) against 14.5 million dollars (80.3 million reais).
