
The President of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, deplored the death in the snow avalanche of the Tablato peak, in the seaside resort of Panticosa (Huesca), of three people, who he stressed were “expert mountaineers, who lived by and for the Pyrenees.” “An avalanche claimed the lives of three lovers of the Pyrenees,” he said.
Azcón recalled from the base of the Panticosa heliport that these victims were “three expert mountaineers”, including two men and a woman. They are on Jorge García-Dihinx, well known on social media and with a blog on meteorology and mountaineering; his partner, Natalia Román, and a neighbor from Irun (Gipuzkoa), according to sources close to the case.
In addition to the three people who died, there was another person who was slightly injured by hypothermia when he was also swept away by the avalanche on Tablato Peak, around 2,200 meters above sea level, near the Panticosa thermal baths. There were two other men in the group, who were unhurt. and it was they who alerted the emergency services.
The President of the Executive conveyed his condolences and condolences to the relatives of the deceased and to all lovers of mountaineering, a pastime of the victims who practiced as hobby. “They were very popular people in the region. and experts, not only mountaineers, but also meteorologists”, he commented to praise the knowledge they had of the mountain, “not only of the Pyrenees, but they were among the best mountaineers in Spain”.
“It was a stroke of bad luck” added. At no time did he confirm the identity of the deceased and clarified that this work is a task of the Civil Guard. “Official contacts must be made through the Civil Guard and the emergency services,” he added. He clarified that he had had contact with some of his relatives who called him to confirm the news, but he reiterated that they had had “no official contact”.
A rescue in “record time”
Azcón congratulated the emergency services and the Civil Guard because The rescue “was carried out in record time”. He highlighted the professionalism shown by the agents themselves on the ground to salute the “magnificent” work carried out by the Guardia Civil de Montaña, known throughout Aragon. “Once again, unfortunately, on this occasion we had the opportunity to prove it,” he lamented.
The Aragonese president recalled that “Zero risk in the mountains does not exist” and that this event should remind all those who practice sports in these environments “to be very responsible because even if you are a professional mountain expert, even if you are a professional meteorological expert, you can have a stroke of bad luck”. Thus, he stressed that this snow avalanche “makes it one of the worst avalanches that we have ever remembered”, since out of a group of six people, three died.
“This is a particularly sad avalanche. It is a death that touches us and moves us especially because of the knowledge they had in the valley and in the mountains”, he emphasized. After recognizing that the Aragonese mountains “are in mourning”, he declared that although anyone who loses their life in the Pyrenees is a misfortune, it is “particularly sad” in this specific case, in which “the knowledge, experience and professionalism that she had of the valley was known on social networks by all those who love the Pyrenees”.
