Drivers who committed traffic violations on SĂŁo Paulo’s roads in recent days could receive an unwanted Christmas present. According to a report released this Monday (29) by the Military Highway Police, approximately 56,000 fines were issued on the highways of the state of SĂŁo Paulo from December 24 to 28.
The fines were made both by radar and by officer observation.
Of the total fines issued, 21,000 were for speeding and 1,000 for inappropriate use of mobile phones while driving.
In total, more than 15,000 vehicles were inspected between Christmas Eve and last Sunday (28). And among them, in addition to the irregularities, 400 kilos of cocaine were found.
From the 24th to the 28th, according to the traffic police, 37 people died in road accidents on the national roads of SĂŁo Paulo, including 4 due to crushing, 10 on motorcycles and 23 on board other vehicles. In total, 331 accidents were recorded.
“As part of the prevention of risky behavior, 28,000 breathalyzer tests were carried out, identifying 77 drunk drivers, in addition to the refusal of 1,235 drivers to submit to the breathalyzer test, a serious offense which carries penalties identical to those taken when drunk,” indicates the Road Police, in a note.
This Monday, in four and a half hours, on the Anhanguera highway, in Sumaré (SP), in the Campinas region, 198 vehicles were detected by a mobile radar exceeding the speed in a section where the limit is 100 km/h.
On Friday (26), 80 vehicles were detected by a mobile radar above their speed on the Bandeirantes highway, in Itupeva, in the JundiaĂ region (the limit is 120 km/h).
On Saturday (27), the 6th Traffic Police Battalion launched a pilot project to monitor the Tamoios highway, the main access to the northern coast of the state, with the use of drones.
“The action consisted of capturing images of vehicles traveling in the wrong direction and on the shoulder, among other offenses, endangering other motorway users,” the police said in a press release.
The operational infrastructure, which was supported by the concessionaire Tamoios, administrator of the highway, has two command posts installed to operate the unmanned aircraft.
In the first case, the drone took off from Contorno Sul (connection between Caraguatatuba and SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo) and recorded images that were shared in real time with the second command post, at the SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo traffic police base.
The drivers were then arrested and informed that they had been fined based on the footage captured by the drones. The total number of fines imposed for using the aircraft was not reported.
