The opposition “interrupted” the parliamentary recess to pressure the National Congress to dismiss Minister Alexandre de Moraes from the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and open a Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) into the Banco Master fraud. The request for dismissal of the magistrate was presented this Monday (2912) by the deputy Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB), leader of the opposition bloc.
“It was not the Congress that suspended the holidays, but the opposition, to begin the process of dismissal of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, because of the case of the Master bank. It is a different matter, it has shaken the Republic of Brazil. Our goal is to exceed the largest number in history, which is more than 150 deputies and more than 40 senators”, declared Gilberto Silva, during a press conference, in the Green Room of the Bedroom.
The office of the minister’s wife, Viviane Barci de Moraes, signed a 129 million reais contract with Banco Master, the target of fraud allegations.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes has already accumulated at least 43 impeachment requests since 2021. This year, the opposition attempted to impeach Moraes due to his role in the investigation into the coup plot, for which former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was sentenced to prison. However, the Bolsonarist bloc sees in the Master’s scandal a facade of weariness for the minister. This is when Gilberto Silva believes he can count on increased support from Congress.
“We wanted to file the request (for impeachment) today, but the parliamentarians who wanted to participate had already made plans. Due to the holidays, we will collect the largest number of signatures. We already have 114, but we want to reach 200 in February. So far, 14 senators have signed,” the opposition leader said.

A request for impeachment does not require the submission of a minimum number of signatures, but it does require the approval of Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) to be advanced. Once accepted, impeachment requires the support of 2/3 of the senators to be implemented.
The CPMI’s request needs the support of 27 senators and 171 deputies. According to Gilberto Silva, the opposition had until Monday afternoon the support of 170 representatives of the House and 20 of the Senate.
To be created, the commission requires a decision from Alcolumbre, which would also take into account the political position of the President of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB).
In this sense, the presidents of Congress have been the target of accusations. “The two presidents, Alcolumbre and Motta, must be proud. We must feel offended, spat on, disrespected,” lamented Senator Magno Malta (PL-ES). Deputy General Girão (PL-RN) added: “Be macho and act in accordance with what you were elected to do. Motta and Alcolumbre, we demand that you open investigations.”
