Police officers suspected of massacre are the target of an operation in Paraíba
The date was set after some requests for postponement from the defendants’ defense. All were pronounced by the Court to be submitted to a popular jury.
The term “indictment” is used to refer to the phase of the process in which the judge decides whether or not the case constitutes an intentional – intentional – crime against life.
If the agreement is yes, the accused will have to face the popular jury, which will happen with the five accused of the massacre.
The crime
According to the investigation, the murders, planned for at least two months, were motivated by interest in a property where some of the victims lived.
Valued at 2 million reais, the Itapoã land has a private waterfall, a large area of cattle grass and approximately 5 hectares, the equivalent of 50,000 square meters.
The plan was therefore to murder the entire family and take possession of the property, leaving no living heir. But the land did not even belong to the victim, the family patriarch, Marcos Antônio Lopes de Oliveira, the first to be brutally killed. The farm has been the subject of litigation since 2020, in which the real owners are trying to reclaim the acreage.
The massacre was meticulously planned, according to the Federal District Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPDFT). On October 23, the defendants rented the Planaltina prison, where they would hold the victims hostage.
The family members were then lured into ambushes and murdered one by one. They are: Elizamar da Silva, her three children – Rafael, 6 years old; Rafaela, 6 years old; and Gabriel, 7, and his partner, Thiago Gabriel Belchior. Marcos Antônio Lopes de Oliveira, Renata Juliene Belchior and Gabriela Belchior – Thiago’s parents and sister – were also targets of criminal actions. Besides them, Claudia Regina de Oliveira and Ana Beatriz Marques de Oliveira, members of Marcos Antônio’s other family.
