The EEST No. 2 electromechanics course worked all year/day
And once again solidarity and ingenuity were on display at Villa Elisa Technical Middle School No. 2, when students from the electromechanics course converted a bicycle for a neighbor with disabilities. A project that spanned the whole year and required both creativity and social commitment.
The initiative benefited 16-year-old Alexis Thiago Martín Arreigada Velázquez, who had a bike customized by hand, but it had structural defects and difficulties in daily use. After learning about his situation, the facility’s teachers contacted the family and decided to carry out a comprehensive restoration of the vehicle.
The work, developed by 5th year electromechanics students, was developed in workshop exercises under the coordination of teachers Alejandro Cabaña and Leonardo Corujo. “A complete study of the bike was carried out, analyzing the structure and drive system and deciding which parts could be reused and which needed to be replaced,” explained Leonardo Corujo.
The students made cuts, welds and adjustments, integrated parts from other bikes and improved posture to make handling easier. “I would tell you that 95% is completely recycled. For its production we use materials from end-of-life vehicles and school elements such as tables or chairs. This is also part of the idea that the children learn to reuse what they have and not feel the need to keep buying new things,” said Alejandro Cabaña.
The project spanned the entire school year and required the use of various workshop-specific tools and technologies. The delivery of the bike was also accompanied by Darío Mediotti, head of the school department, who highlighted the educational and social value of the experience. “The level of education is not good in terms of inputs and resources, so we are trying to ensure that students understand this and focus on the needs of the society,” he explained.
From the educational community they emphasized that these types of initiatives strengthen the role of the technical school and its connection with the environment, offering concrete solutions to real needs. “It is a great pride, both for the team and for the students we had this year. They are children who like it and want to learn,” they concluded.
