Vito Quills celebrate This Friday Political event on campus The lake (Tenerife) is not authorized by the university presidency, surrounded by a large police force and facing protests by about 200 people.
Quiles spoke on a megaphone to a hundred supporters gathered in the parking lot in front of the law school, where shouts of “Support Spain,” insults to President Pedro Sanchez, and anti-immigration statements could be heard.
He began his intervention by criticizing ULL Dean, Francisco Garcia, for refusing to allow his event.
A few days ago, ULL’s top administrative body issued a public statement with its reasons: it stressed that the university was committed to “freedom of expression and pluralistic and respectful debate”, but “cannot protect the dissemination of misinformation or messages contrary to human rights, freedom, equality or dignity of people”.
Later, Vito Quiles referred to students who were protesting his presence on campus as “defenders of a criminal and wretched ideology.”
He said, “I have been told a lot in recent days that this university is extreme left-wing and that no one will come. And that all the people in this college are against what we believe, we who defend national Spain.”
The protest demonstration was promoted by the Canary Islands Students Association (ACE), whose representative, Andres Paz Paes, accused Quiles of seeking to “blow up coexistence” in an educational center where “people of all ideologies” sit for “dialogue about a common future.”
“He came to spread hatred, to spread a speech based on lies, with the sole aim of attacking a political opponent,” Pais noted. “His speech violates human rights, is against gender equality, denies climate change, and denies people’s sexual freedom. We cannot compromise on a speech that violates the principles and goals of the university itself.”
In a statement, Podemos asked the government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, to provide “urgent explanations” for the fact that this act by Quiles was allowed on the La Laguna campus despite not having permission from the university.
The party also disputes that police “accompanied” a “far-right instigator” while “inciting violence.”
