Each start of the year brings with it a new calendar and, with it, the opportunity to know the astronomical agenda that will mark the months to come. In 2026, four eclipses are expected – two solar and two lunar – as well as a series of full moons which will allow us to precisely follow the cycles of our natural satellite.
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has published the complete calendar for the year, offering detailed data on the phases of the Moon, seasonal changes and eclipses, with exact times and associated constellations. Below you will find the main astronomical events of 2026, aimed both at amateurs and those who want to plan observations from different points in the northern hemisphere.
Seasons
The year 2026 will follow the usual cycle of seasons in the northern hemisphere, with specific dates and times for its start. Spring will begin on March 20 at 3:46 p.m., marking the gradual increase in daylight. Summer will begin on June 21 at 10:24 a.m., when the longest day of the year will be recorded. Autumn will begin on September 23 at 2:05 a.m., when daylight hours begin to steadily decrease. Finally, winter will begin on December 21 at 9:50 p.m., coinciding with the longest night of the year.
Eclipses
In 2026, four eclipses will occur, visible in different regions of the planet, including both solar and lunar eclipses. On February 17 there will be an annular solar eclipse, which can be observed as annular in Antarctica and partially in southern Argentina, Chile, southern Africa and parts of Antarctica. Shortly thereafter, on March 3, there will be a total lunar eclipse, visible from East Asia, Australia, the Pacific and America.
In August, the phenomena will repeat: a total solar eclipse on August 12, visible in total in the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland and Spain, and partially in northern North America, West Africa and Europe. Finally, on August 28, there will be a partial lunar eclipse, with visibility in the eastern Pacific, America, Europe and Africa.
