I just saw the summary of the year on JT La 1 on RTVE. I thought it would be somewhat biased, but I couldn’t imagine to what extent. Biased information, carefully chosen news, out-of-context statements from leaders … from the right to attack them or from the left to benefit from them, make this summary a clear and scandalous manipulation. Several minutes talking about Gaza (no one doubts that what was committed there was an atrocity), but not a word about the Hamas attack; The cause of the fires is above all climate change; amnesty is constitutional (point); Hoaxes (right) are the main causes of the current situation; They take the last image of Lorca before being filmed (about what?); etc., etc. In short, it’s very unfortunate how low RTVE has fallen, and I remember we all paid for it.

Cruelty tolerated
I write to you moved by deep indignation at the hypocrisy surrounding our celebrations. While our laws pride themselves on protecting animal welfare, our streets periodically become war zones due to the use of firecrackers and loud pyrotechnics. For many, noise is synonymous with partying; For animals, it’s the sound of panic. We’re not just talking about “inconveniences.” We talk about dogs dying of heart attacks, birds abandoning their nests in the middle of winter, and animals who, in a state of blind terror, escape and end up being crushed. How is it possible that a society that calls itself advanced allows the entertainment of a few to be based on the physical and psychological suffering of vulnerable beings? It is urgent that administrations stop looking the other way. There are alternatives such as silent pyrotechnics or drone and light shows, which allow for fun without causing tachycardia, convulsions or death from shock. Animal welfare cannot be a simple medal that the system hangs up whenever it sees fit; This must be a real commitment. If a tradition kills, it is no longer culture, it is cruelty.

Oh tempora, oh more
At the start of 2025, I thought I heard the president of the government say that “fifty years without Franco” were going to be celebrated with 110 initiatives, which. For some of us of a certain age, it reminded us of the Franco regime’s “twenty-five years of peace” campaign. Fortunately, this was not the case, but, at the end of 2025, those of us who wondered at the time how much real peace there was in those 25 years without war, now, given what we have seen, we must ask ourselves how much real democracy there is in this dictatorship-free Spain. Oh tempora, oh more!
