BBC Director-General Tim Davie and BBC Chief Executive Deborah Turness announced their resignations on Sunday (09/11) after revelations of controversy surrounding a documentary about US President Donald Trump.
The British newspaper The Telegraph published details of an internal BBC memo indicating that Panorama edited an excerpt combining two parts of Trump’s speech, making it appear that he explicitly encouraged the riots at the Capitol in January 2021.
“I have made mistakes, and as general manager I must bear the highest responsibility,” Davey said in a statement.
In another message, Torness indicated that “the situation ends with me,” describing the decision to resign as “difficult.”
BBC chairman Samir Shah said: “The entire board respects the decision.”
The memo leaked to the Telegraph was drafted by Michael Prescott, an independent external consultant who served on the company’s editorial standards committee. He left the position in June.
In the statement, Davey also said he is working with the board to ensure an orderly transition over the coming months.
