Have you ever wondered how many times the letter can be delivered to the herald of the Three Kings without the doubt generated by this overpopulation of factors endangering the illusion? My three year olds have already written four cards in different … mailboxes and have sat on the laps of at least five Santas and assorted pages so far this Christmas. At least they are still too young to draw conclusions, but we should encourage them to consider them. The agenda for the new year is no less busy. Until Sunday, when the official herald will circulate, meetings are planned in the city with at least six or seven royal factors in the neighborhoods, shopping centers and some other institutions. If it ultimately turns out that Their Eastern Majesties have more paid employees than the Post Office, which these days is behind in processing packages and gets delivery addresses wrong.
What we have confirmed is that there are more heralds than local police. Following so many cavalcades – none surpassed by that of Los Remedios, which holds the record by bringing no fewer than 1,200 Bedouins into the streets – is impossible. We have only perpetuated the inertia of last fall with extraordinary processions, which prove untouchable because it is a popular demonstration which has the same entity as a protest. And now with Christmas parades the same thing is happening. But are they the same? Are they protected by article 21 of the Spanish Constitution? It should be consulted because what is really happening in the street requires adequate security measures and a preventive health system like that engaged by clubs and sports federations for matches or event companies for mass concerts.
We have become accustomed to liberating everything protected by constitutional rights, either out of religious fervor or the enthusiasm of children – for the children, they say. After so many excesses, the mayor’s idea of making those who want to take to the streets pay for security seems to me more and more coherent and, above all, fairer. Ultimately, anything free comes from your taxes and mine. The overtime of the Local Police, who maintained, not without reason, a tough fight against José Luis Sanz, are paid by all of us. No one can support that many popular street protests, even if music groups have to have a waiting list with so many fraternity and Christmas events, which end up overlapping on the calendar. For this new year, we must resolve to take stock of things, if only so as not to wipe out the enthusiasm of children.
