According to reports published by the New York Times and Reuters, the CIA had a small team operating in Venezuela since August, when the United States began deploying military fleets to the Caribbean. Intelligence agents were able to provide information on Maduro’s standard of living, which would have facilitated his capture.
Sources said the US intelligence agency also had an informant close to Maduro who was monitoring his movements and was prepared to reveal his exact location as the military action unfolded. This indicates that there may have been internal collaboration with the United States for Saturday’s action, allegedly coming from a member of Maduro’s security services or a high-ranking member of the Chavista regime.
Maduro’s son, who is also among the defendants in a New York federal court and is wanted by US authorities, said he was “fine” and “calm” after the bombings in Venezuelan territory, and reiterated the call for popular mobilization of regime supporters.
“We are fine, we are calm. You will see us in the streets, you will see us alongside these people, you will see us waving the flags of dignity. They want to see us weak, they will not see us weak”, declared Maduro Guerra in an audio broadcast on social networks and whose veracity was confirmed by his team to AFP. “They will not succeed (…), I swear on my life, I swear on my father, I swear on Cilia, that we will get out of this difficulty. I am firm. We are firm and my family is firm, strong and tough.”
