For those who love bicycles and want to move between central Rio and the southern region, the task will be easier on Saturday, the holiday of the proclamation of the Republic. Rio Traffic Engineering Company (CET-Rio) will temporarily install about ten kilometers of bike lanes, which will connect to 7.3 kilometers of bike paths already in place between the two city areas, connecting Praça Mauá to the Leblon waterfront. The scheme, which will operate from 8am to 4pm, will occupy a strip (adjacent to the centre) of the seafront road near the buildings.

A 2.7 km long cycle track will be implemented in the center and 7 in the southern region. The area exclusively for traditional electric bikes will start from Praça Mauá and continue along Avenida Rio Branco until the corner of Nilo Peçanha. From this point, passing through Atero do Flamengo and Enseida de Botafogo, to Avenida Princesa Isabel, in Copacabana, cyclists will use the existing bike path. On Avenida Atlantica, the bicycle path again becomes part of the route, passing through Rua Francisco Ottaviano (in the vehicle lane adjacent to the bicycle path) and Avenida Vieira Soto, in Ipanema, until the end of Delfim Moreira, in Leblon.

– The goal is to expand the space dedicated to bicycle use, connect the city’s entertainment areas and create safe conditions for cyclists and pedestrians – highlights Luis Eduardo Oliveira, President of CET-Rio.
While the main attraction on the part of the bike trail that runs through the southern area is the beaches, the attraction of Praça Mauá is the cultural circuit, with spaces such as the Museum of Tomorrow and the Rio Art Museum.
The bike path will be marked with 1,700 cones and 150 fences. The operation will be supported by CET-Rio agents, the Municipal Guard and the sub-prefectures of the Central and Southern Region, who will provide traffic guidance at strategic points along the route.
The operation will include 1,700 cones, 440 cans and 150 barrier fences, as well as supporting traffic agents and advisors at strategic points along the route. The sub-prefectures of the central and southern regions and the Municipal Guard will also support the testing.
Although the test takes place on Saturday, the process will only take place on Sundays and holidays if it is finally approved.
– There is still no plan to implement the proposal permanently. Other tests will be conducted in other areas. The challenge is reconciling that with the city’s already huge calendar of events, Oliveira says. — Behavior on Sundays and holidays allows testing to be performed without significant effects. The context will generate a period of adjustment, but we believe it is appropriate. CET-Rio teams will measure these impacts and make adjustments where necessary.
CET-Rio informs that parking will be prohibited on days of entertainment areas (Sundays and holidays) on the Ipanema and Leblon waterfront.
50 km of bike path in sight
The proposal, which was posted on the company’s social media sites, divided opinions. There are those who praised it and those who criticized that the initiative began in the southern region.
One netizen praised “Glaço.”
“When will we have a bike path and/or bike lane connecting the northern area to the centre?” asked another.
When asked, the President said that “the northern region will be the subject of the study, yes, but the areas will still be defined” and that 50 kilometers of bicycle paths and bike lanes are planned to be implemented in the city:
— Tomorrow’s operation is a test in an area with a high demand for cyclists.
