Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived today, Sunday (11/16/2025), in Athens with the aim of finalizing an agreement to import gas from Greece, to guarantee his country’s energy supplies during the winter, in a context marked by war with Russia.
Zelensky was initially greeted at Athens International Airport by Greek Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hadjidakis, according to photos broadcast by Greek public television ERT, and then by Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas at the presidential palace. The visit marks the start of a European tour that will also take the Ukrainian president to France and Spain, where he plans to address key issues related to defense and energy cooperation.
The European tour, which he hopes will be “fruitful”
In his first visit to Greece since 2023, Zelensky will meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, among other senior officials. Before his arrival, Zelensky announced on social networks: “We are preparing an agreement with Greece to supply gas to Ukraine.” Zelensky noted that there are already agreements to finance gas imports in the amount of approximately 2 billion euros, which will make it possible to compensate for losses in Ukrainian production due to Russian attacks.
The Ukrainian president also announced that he would conclude a “historic” agreement with France on Monday regarding combat aviation and defense capabilities, and expressed his conviction in the success of the talks in Spain. “On Tuesday, we have been preparing for a long time and now we can say that the visit to Spain will be fruitful. Another strong country has joined partners in initiatives that are really helping us,” he said.
