Among the signatories of the statement are Chico Buarque, Fernanda Montenegro, Ana María Machado, Roscica D’Arcy de Oliveira, Ailton Krenac, Itamar Vieira Jr., Margaret Dalcolmo, Bruna Lombardi, Patricia Pilar and Conceição Evaristo.
Writer and cultural director Afonso Borges, who is leading the initiative, says he understands, in part, the editors’ argument that using plastic helps transport books in a continental country like Brazil without damaging them due to rain and wind.
Therefore, Afonso is also betting on solving the problem through scientific work. He cites, as an example, the study conducted by scientists from the National Laboratory of Nanotechnology CNPEM, in partnership with Unicamp and UFABC, who developed a biodegradable paper of plant origin that combines high resistance, barrier against liquids and oxygen, and antibacterial action.
