Herbert Viana is revered as a master of the art of knowing when to shine with the guitar, whether adding weight and distortion, adjusting the tempo, or soloing smoothly and melodically. His talent as a guitarist is impressive, creating clever riffs and solos that have become the hallmark of the Paralamas sound.
At the Estilo Brasil Festival, where Os Paralamas do Sucesso will perform on November 21 in Brasilia, the audience will certainly witness the performance of some of the most famous compositions and solos of Herbert Viana, who turned 64 and has dedicated more than 45 years to Brazilian music.
Herbert’s guitar is the band’s signature element, which gradually becomes noticeable until it becomes impossible to ignore. His style is the result of a crossroads of influences ranging from Sting and Paul Weller to Jimmy Page and Santana.

The milestone in Paralamas’ work shows when the group gained international power
Among the guitarist’s most notable moments, the solo on “Lanterna dos Afogados” (1989) is often listed as his finest, a veritable explosion of melody. Other notable explosive tracks include “Selvagem” (1986) and “Kaleidscope” (1990), which showcase the band’s more swinging side.
Herbert’s versatility is also evident in tracks like “Romance Ideal” (1984), where he plays precise and smooth playing, or in “Cuide Bem do Seu Amor” (2002), where he shows his melodic 2000s side.
On the album O Passo do Lui (1984), for example, the heaviness of Herbert Viana’s guitar was essential in making songs like “Mensagem de Amor” sound fresh even nearly four decades after their release. Already on the Selvagem album? (1986), Herbert’s “Caribbean guitar” is evident, especially on the track “Alagados”.
The show at Estilo Brasil Festival promises to be a showcase of these amazing guitar moments, as the trio celebrates four decades of their career. This event is held by Capitals Produced by Oh! Arts, and is presented by Banco do Brasil Estilo, sponsored by BB Visa, Banco do Brasil and Federal Government Cards.
