“I received the order from the national leadership (of the People’s Party).” It is now official, Juanfran Pérez Jurca is the candidate of the Popular Party for the state of Valenciana after the resignation a few days ago of Carlos Mazón, who was overtaken by his questionable management of Aldana on October 29, 2024, which caused the death of 229 people in the province of Valencia. In this way, Pérez Jurca announced on Wednesday, the last day of the deadline to do so, that he had submitted his candidacy to “try to invest” as president of the state of Valenciana.
The candidate, who currently has the support of only 40 deputies from the Valencian People’s Party to be the new president of the Council, has already insisted that in May 2023 “the community voted for change; the policies for change had to be put in place, and that is why there is a conviction that the People’s Party must present a candidate”, and he feels “capable of taking this forward”.
Regarding the necessary support from “Fox,” he explained that although there is no government agreement yet, “the most logical thing” is to search for formulas for inauguration, as budgets, laws, and decrees have been approved… “and this stability must continue.” Likewise, he defended that he has already shown “relevance” when it comes to seeking agreements, and that, beyond the differences that there may be with the far right, “there is a sense of responsibility”, so he does not doubt that they will be able to reach an agreement, although he stated that he is not worried about signing an agreement before the inauguration.
From now on, a period of three to seven calendar days is open for holding the founding plenary session. The exact date must be agreed upon by the Cortes Valenciennes Council, which meets tomorrow, Thursday, and which will most likely announce the holding of the plenary session for next week, once the statement of Pérez Jurca as a witness before the Dana judge, scheduled for next Friday, November 21, has been passed.
However, the agreement with the Vox Party to install the Popular Party candidate has yet to be closed. Although contacts have been taking place between the two formations for days, and although there seems to be good harmony – as the People’s Party does not object much to the demands of the far right – the Vox Party has already made it clear in the last few hours that the fact that there is a candidate “does not mean that there is a closed agreement.”
In this sense, the spokesman for the Vox party in the Cortes, José María Llanos, acknowledged what Pérez Jurca explained, that there are negotiations but not a closed agreement: “There is good harmony to preserve the best agreement for the people of Valencia.” However, he noted that the PP must be “up to the task” to conclude what he called “a good agreement” for Valencians: “We want there to be negotiations that reach a good end,” although they will not “require a notarized contract.” Moreover, they point out that they do not care whether they join the council or not: “We advocate specific policies.”
Among Vox’s priorities, as Pérez Jurca explained, are the water works, seeking consensus on the Green Charter and immigration, the continuity of the Cofrientes nuclear power plant, or the problems of rice farmers in Valencia, among other issues. Llanos wants to reach a closed agreement before securing his support for the inauguration of the People’s Party candidate in Valencia.
