Almond pipes apologize for coughing. The day before the interview, he had done what he had done for 20 years on Mondays: he sang in Samba do Trabalhador, a group he created at the Renaissance club, in Andarai, in the northern region of Rio. The difference now is that just over a month ago, he underwent surgery to implant two electrodes in his brain, in order to reduce the effects of Parkinson’s disease.

-I eat alone, walk alone, play, work. I’m very, very optimistic – he’s celebrating because he’s going back to São Paulo next Friday so neurosurgeon Eric Fonov can increase the strength of electrical points in his brain. -If I had to stop as I am, I would be satisfied already.
“Boys” work.
The good phase comes with the album “Moacyr Luz eo Samba do Trabalhador – 20 anos” released by Biscoito Fino. There are 16 songs, 12 of which were written by the Rio artist with partners. Of the six, he sings at least one part. According to him, he let the “boys” take more responsibility at work.

Since its first official presentation, the newspaper has always been a partner in the great popular festival
The “boys” are Gabriel Cavalcanti (guitar and vocal), Alexandre Marmita (guitar and vocal), Daniel Neves (seven-string guitar), Mingo Silva (percussion and vocal), Nelson Visual (percussion) and Junior de Oliveira (percussion), in addition to Leandro Pereira who played guitar and musical direction. It is the group’s sixth album, which also contains three DVDs. There have been two Brazilian Music Awards and a Latin Grammy nomination so far.
Gabriel, who was musical director for previous works, says he sought to create a collection of contemporary compositions. Only five of them have been released, and four of them are on one of the artist’s most important albums, “O samba na Cidade” (2003), which remains off audio platforms today.
– These are songs that are somewhat lost, but often sung in renacienza – explains Gabriel, who started in Samba do Trabalhador when he was only 19 years old. — These twenty years of ours in the circle have shown that it is worth insisting on the repertoire of composition. Consistency in persistence. Plant a flag, or sign something. Moacyr has earned that right.

The four from “O samba na Cidade” are “Vila Isabel” (partnered with Martinho da Villa), “Tudo que vivi” (with Wilson das Neves), “Vinte sete Zero nove” (with Ney Lopez), and “Mitos cariocas: Lan” (with Alder Blanc). The latter has gained a faster pace, being taken up in suburban circles.
– It is a studio album with a samba circuit rhythm – says Gabriel, co-author (with Roberto Didio) of one of the songs, “Roda de Partido”.
The album features guest appearances by Pedro Luis (on “Água santa”, his partnership with Moacyr), Dunga (“Todo santo dia”, also a partnership) and Joyce Moreno (“I Did Samba for Bahia”, written by Moacyr and Sereno). Marina Auris sings the song “Dezesseis”, lyrics left by Alder Blanc and recited by his widow, Marie-Saa Freire, to Pipes. Also in the duo’s repertoire is the song “Cachaça, Árvore Bandeira”, a tribute to Mangueirense composer Carlos Cachaça.
Even as his health deteriorated, Al-Mawasir asserts that he never stopped composing. Recently, he completed a samba with Teresa Cristina and another with Ruggero Caetano. The improvement after surgery allowed him to return to playing the guitar easily, as he demonstrated in Renascença. On Thursdays, he and the group perform in front of about two thousand people at Arena Brava Jockey, in Gávea, in the southern region of Rio.
– It’s all impressive. Not even in my wildest dreams, I would not be able to reach half of what happened during these 20 years – says Moaser, 67 years old. -I am almost 70 years old, I want to rest. But I could go on for a few more years.
He says he recently saw the cover of the CD “Esquina carioca,” produced in São Paulo in 1999, with Doña Ivoni Lara, Beth Carvalho, João Nogueira, Luiz Carlos da Villa and Walter Alviati. Note: Only he is alive.
– All I can do is keep going. I still have stories to tell, he says.
Moaser lost another friend: Jardis McCallie. The two, Goinga and Ze Renato, intermittently performed “Dobrando a Carioca” for 20 years (1999 to 2019). Moacyr also produced two Macalé CDs: “Macalé canta Moreira” (2001) and “Amor, order & progress” (2003).
-We spoke a week before the surgery. He asked me to pray for him. The day after the operation, he called and said that he was still under anesthesia, with his vision changing: “My wife looks like a giraffe,” he recalls, explaining that his friend, who had a cardiac arrest while recovering from surgery for bronchial pneumonia, had not lost his good sense of humor.
