Without much of a performance, Benfica advanced to the round of 16 of the Portuguese Cup. On Friday (21), the Eagles defeated Atletico Lisbon 2-0, at the Restelo Stadium, in the fourth round of the competition. Richard Reus, former Palmeiras player, scored his first goal for the Portuguese team. Alongside him, Pavlidis scored the second goal from a penalty kick in a difficult and lackluster victory.
Jose Mourinho’s side underperformed against third-tier opposition. The coach promoted the three midfielders, but faced difficulties in creating play, especially in the first half. In the second stage, the coach made changes, but very few due to the difference between the two teams. The Eagles did not score until after the second half.
Richard Reus scored his first goal since arriving at Benfica. After a corner kick, the Colombian rose above everyone and scored into the net after shooting a header into the goalkeeper’s left corner. The second goal did not take long. The referee called a foul on Leandro Barreiro inside the area. In this way, Pavlidis widened the gap.
There are still eight more matches in the fourth round of the Portuguese Cup on Saturday. Sporting, the cup holders, and Porto will play as hosts against Marinense and Centrense, respectively. Furthermore, there will still be seven more games on Sunday.
In fact, Benfica’s next match will be on Tuesday against Ajax Amsterdam in the fifth round of the Champions League.
