Wicked: Part II just opened this week in theaters, as the conclusion of Evil (2024), the adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name that hit the big screen divided into two parts. However, it seems like we could still have more of this universe on screen.
Stephen Schwartzthe composer and producer of Evilhe told the media The Anklet who has a new project in hand and is doing it in collaboration with Winnie Holzmanauthor of the original libretto of Evil and also the film’s screenwriter.
“Winnie Holzman and I are working on ideas that are not a sequence of Evilbecause I think the story of Glinda and Elfaba is complete; but there are other aspects that could be explored”, explained Stephen Schwartz.
Wicked: Part II may have a sequel
The composer of Evil let slip that there are several books written by Gregory Maguire defined in this new version of The Wizard of Oz that could serve as a starting point.
The author published Wicked: Memoirs of a Wicked Witch in 1995, which would end up becoming the musical we know, but later also launched soap operas: son of the witch (2005), A lion among men (2008) and Out of Oz (2011).
“There’s another idea that Winnie and I are considering: not a sequel, but a complement. Let’s put it that way,” explained Stephen Schwartz, who reaffirmed his interest in returning to this world “if anyone thought of a continuation of the story that had a justification beyond simply making money.”
Given the success of Evil and Wicked: Part II in theaters, and taking into account the team’s interest in continuing to explore this universe, it wouldn’t be surprising if Universal Images began revising scripts to continue building on the momentum of both films.
