While handing over recovered vehicles in Bogotá, Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán put the effectiveness of current legislation against the crime of car theft at the center of the debate.

At the event, 43 newly recovered vehicles and 28 motorcycles were handed over, with the local leader presenting figures that, he said, showed a structural problem.

Galland stressed that the roots of the problem do not lie in the work of prosecutors or judges, but rather in the rules governing the punishment of perpetrators of these crimes. The mayor requested an urgent review of the legislation that punishes vehicle theftArguing that current regulations make it difficult for criminals to stay behind bars.

“This year, 390 people were arrested for this crime, but 270 people were released. It is not easy to make progress,” Carlos Fernando Galán explained.

The mayor also confirmed: “7 out of 10 arrested for car theft were released.”In their view, this represents a worrying gap between police efforts and the judicial outcome.

As he put it, the difficulty lies in the systems, not in the officials who implement them: “The problem does not lie in the prosecutors or judges, but in the systems that the country applies.”
