The Premier League files a multi-million dollar lawsuit against UEFA

As Real Madrid leaked two weeks ago and as the White President himself confirmed in the Assembly last Sunday, the Premier League has activated a multi-million dollar lawsuit against UEFA which plans to demand more than 4,000 million euros: «A22 Sports Management (“A22”) announces that it has initiated on 21 November the mandatory MASC (Appropriate Means of Dispute Resolution) procedure, in accordance with Spanish procedural legislation, as a preliminary step to filing a lawsuit against UEFA. The purpose of this action is to seek compensation for damages suffered as a result of UEFA’s abuse of its dominant position as a monopoly operator in the European football club competitions market.

A22 issued a statement analyzing what happened last year and regretting that various meetings with UEFA did not bear fruit: “In December 2024, A22 formally asked UEFA to recognize the Unify League, and its proposal for new European competitions. This application fully complies with the requirements set by the arbitrator European Court of Justice. A22 subsequently engaged in good faith negotiations with UEFA for a period of seven months (between March and September 2025) in an attempt to agree a comprehensive and collaborative resolution to the ongoing litigation. During these negotiations, A22 made important concessions to bring positions closer, focusing on three critical axes: an improved format, modern governance and the implementation of the Unify streaming platform, in order to provide greater affordability and cutting-edge technology to fans watching matches from home. Despite these fundamental commitments, no agreement was reached. Therefore the only appropriate course at this time is to seek compensation for damages suffered as a result of the EU’s continued wrongful behaviour.

A22 confirms that it failed European Court of Justice UEFA has called for the market to be opened up to third-party organisers, such as A22. And then there were two more, but the organization did not give up: “Despite the final rulings of three European judicial bodies – including the European Court of Justice and the Regional Court of Spain – UEFA maintains existing regulations and practices that are in direct conflict with the aforementioned judicial decisions. This includes new rules introduced in 2024, following a landmark ruling by the European Court of Justice. By challenging these rulings, UEFA now faces a scenario of significant ownership claims by both the clubs and A22.
