The Chinese Room tried to make Bloodlines 2 have another title
Chinese Room co-founder Dan Pinchbeck explained on The Goth Boss Podcast why creating Bloodlines 2 was an almost impossible task.
“From the beginning, I had meetings with Paradox with one goal: to find a way to make sure the game isn’t called Bloodlines 2”confesses Pinchbeck.
“It was the most important We had to make it clear that it wasn’t that game”adds the CEO. Accepting otherwise meant facing almost impossible expectations; but there were other reasons.
According to Dan, The biggest limitations of the project were two: a tight budget and deadlines that prevented the creation of a sequel as ambitious as the original.
And taking charge of this project ended up being, in a way, a “poisoned gift” for The Chinese Room; after taking over development that Hardsuit Labs was unable to complete.
Paradox commissioned the game from the creators of Still Wakes the Deep, with a mandatory delivery date and a modest budget.
The studio was unable to change the title of Bloodlines 2but they made it clear that it could not be a sequel with the same characteristics as the original.
“If I had tried to recreate Bloodlines, it would have failed. “We would have created a broken Bloodlines 2, made in a hurry and without the necessary budget.”explains Pinchbeck.
So Dan told his team clearly: they couldn’t make Bloodlines 2 or Skyrim, but Yes, they would be able to create a Dishonored.
The similarities to the Arkane title were one of the common criticisms against Bloodlines 2; but as Pinchbeck sees it, This model was the only viable one..
“It’s not an RPG, nor is it a completely open world; but it has very focused gameplay, is faithful to the myth of Vampire The Masquerade and offers a lot of fun”determines.
Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 has started its path to redemption, with a first major patch. Who knows: time can become a little cult jewel.
