Aston Martin has announced the appointment of Adrian Newey as its new Formula 1 team principal from the 2026 season onwards. The renowned engineer, who joined the team on March 1 as general technical partner, will take on the new role while Andy Coyle moves to the role of strategy director.

Adrian Newey is considered the most successful designer in the history of Formula 1, with a career full of innovations and titles. He graduated in aerospace engineering from the University of Southampton, and began his career in the 1980s with the Brazilian team Fittipaldi, then went to March in IndyCar, where he already showed a talent by designing winning cars, including the model that won the Indy 500. Shortly after that, he migrated to Formula 1, passing by teams such as March, Williams and McLaren. At Williams, he was responsible for the cars that dominated the category in the 1990s, winning numerous constructors’ and drivers’ titles.

In the 2000s, Newey joined the Red Bull Racing team, where he cemented his reputation as an aerodynamic genius. Under his technical leadership, the team won the drivers’ and constructors’ titles, with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. Throughout his career, the cars he designed collected 12 constructor’s titles and 14 driver’s titles, numbers that make him an absolute authority in the sport. In 2025, after leaving Red Bull, Newey signed with Aston Martin and will now take on the role of team principal.
