Promoted to US Today, Wednesday (26), all criminal charges were filed in the state Georgia Against the American president Donald TrumpOn charges of interfering in the 2020 presidential elections.
According to the Public Prosecutor Peter Skandalakiswho recently took on this role.”There is no realistic possibility that a sitting president would be asked to stand trial in GeorgiaWhich, in his words, would turn the continuation of the case into something “useless and unproductive.”
This was one of four criminal cases that Trump has faced since his election defeat to the former Democratic president Joe Biden.
Only one of these lawsuits, the one in New York over a hush-money payment to a porn actress during her 2016 election campaign, has reached trial. Trump was convicted in this case, but requested that the conviction be overturned.
Skandalakis’ decision represents a bitter defeat for the Fulton County district attorney. Fanny Williswho filed the case in 2023 but later lost control of it amid ethics complaints from defense attorneys.
His decision, which was approved by the judge this morning, said:It is not guided by a desire to advance an agenda, but is based on my beliefs and understanding of the law.“
Trump’s lawyer, Steve Sadow, praised the filing, saying the case should never have been filed.
Willis had denounced Trump and 18 of his defendants, accusing them of participating in a vast criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 elections in Georgia, after it became a recording of Trump asking the state’s top election official to “find” enough votes to give him victory.
Among those accused are Trump’s former lawyers. Rudy Giuliani and John EastmanThose who, like him, declared their innocence.
The appeals court dismissed Willis last year after she had a romantic relationship with the special prosecutor appointed to handle the case.
Skandalakis chairs the Georgia District Attorneys Council, a state agency that supports local prosecutors in the state. Earlier this month, he appointed himself as head of the case, saying he had been unable to find another prosecutor willing to take it on.
