Drugs seized in Panama: 1,162 packages hidden in a container heading to Spain

Panama City, November 26 (EFE). – The Panamanian authorities announced on Wednesday the seizure of a huge shipment of 1,162 packages of drugs bound for Spain, in the Caribbean region of Panama.

The stash of illicit substances was found, “hidden inside a container bound for Spain,” during a raid at a port on the Atlantic coast carried out by security forces and the Public Ministry’s Anti-Narcotics Prosecutor’s Office, the X investigation body noted.

The information did not specify the type of drugs seized or their total weight, although drug packages usually weigh one kilogram, and cocaine is considered the most smuggled through Panama’s ports.

On November 11, Panama reported the “historic” seizure of 13,508 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated market value of about $200 million, on board a tug boat that was intercepted in the waters of the Panamanian Pacific Ocean and was sailing towards North America from Colombia.

In this seizure, 10 citizens from Venezuela, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Colombia were arrested, and they have already been presented to the competent authorities to be accused of the crime of international trafficking in illicit substances.

Panama is a transit country for drugs produced in South America and destined for the United States – the world’s largest consumer of cocaine – and Europe. About 80 tons of illicit substances were seized in 2024, according to official data. Evie
