Man accepts a year and a half in prison for berating a cholera doctor: “You nigger, you came to take jobs from the Spaniards.”

A man accepted a year and a half in prison for berating a doctor at a health center in Cholera (Valencia) and threatening to kill him because of his foreigner status: “You nigger, you came here to take jobs from the Spaniards,” he even said flatly.

Initially, the Public Prosecutor’s Office asked the accused – who was to be tried today in the Third Department of the Valencia District Court – to sentence him to six years in prison for the crimes of assault and menacing, but finally, after admitting the facts and reaching an agreement with the defence, the sentence was reduced to one and a half years in prison for the hate crime and the assault.

In addition, the convicted person must pay a fine and civil liability is assessed in the amount of 6,000 euros. His prison sentence will be suspended if he takes an equality course, Europe Press has learned.

The events date back to September 26, 2023, when the man went to a health center in Cholera to demand urgent health care for his wife. He bypassed the controls and went straight to the counseling area where he started screaming.

He then attempted to enter the office of the doctor, who repeatedly referred to him as “the black man” or “the black man,” in apparent disdain for the color of his skin. After that, Civil Guard members prevented him from entering the center.

Thus, the doctor went with a nurse to the condemned man’s house to visit the patient, accompanied by the Guardia Civil, and the man, far from abandoning his position, continued to berate the doctor, despising him on account of the color of his skin and his status as a foreigner with expressions such as “You damned black man, I will kill you, I will cut you up,” which he repeated on several occasions.

Likewise, he told him: “You are not Spanish. You came here to take jobs from the Spanish.” He tried to attack him, but a member of the Civil Guard prevented him, and told him frankly, referring to the doctor, “I don’t want to hit him, I want to hurt him.”

Finally, the man turned to the doctor again and said, “I will still be alive to pay what I have to pay, but you will not be alive to tell me.”

These events created a great sense of humiliation for the victim, as he felt belittled because of his skin color and national origin, and even more so when he did this in front of several people, including his patient, the nurse, and the authorities.

As a result of these events, the doctor suffered post-traumatic stress that required nothing more than initial assistance and took seven days to recover, all while incapacitating him from performing his usual duties.
