Athlete and world bodybuilding champion, Graciela Carvalho, 39, said that she was exposed to an unexpected situation during a meeting with a secret friend in Miami. After getting used to the routine of performing and monitoring the body, she chose to gift her friend a high-end smart scale – equipment that costs US$499, about R$2,600, and is able to measure body composition, fat and muscle mass and sync the data to her cell phone.

The decision, according to Graciela, came as a result of repeated conversations about her friend’s difficulties in losing weight and monitoring her progress. “She was always complaining about her weight, so I thought a scale would be really helpful,” he explained.

But the reaction was not what was expected. As soon as she opened the gift, Graciela noticed the discomfort. The friend’s expression made it clear that she did not like the product, even after the athlete reinforced the functional nature of the scale. “It was clear that this was not what she wanted,” he added.

The embarrassment increased when Graciela received her own gift: a power stone worth US$30, or about 156 Brazilian reais. Although she claims to respect those who believe in something, she acknowledges that differences in value and intent leave the exchange unbalanced. “It was a very boring moment. The intention was good, but I understood that functional gifts can be interpreted in different ways.”
