Registration is now open for the first wine knowledge course from wine education brand ToutVin, taught by professor and sommelier Elijah Pontis. The “Beginning Sommelier” course contains seven modules that can be completed remotely and is aimed at people interested in learning more about the drink, as well as gastronomic professionals.
Among the main contents covered in the course are sensory analysis of wine, production regions and their main grapes, how to provide wine service (from opening the bottle to serving), wine tasting and gastronomy.
In addition, the training should also cover: organizing wine lists and cellars; Wine and food pairing; Aerating and decanting the wine. Basics about winemaking. Sparkling wine tasting techniques.
Elijah Pontes is a professional sommelier, graduated from the Brazilian Sommelier Association in its first class in the state of Alagoas. “With the increasing growth of the wine market in Brazil, we decided to impart knowledge about the drink, so that beginners and amateurs can enjoy it in the best possible way,” he explains.
Recently, a survey conducted by the Magen David Adom Research Institute, and published by Globo Rural, revealed that seven in ten (70%) of Brazilians interviewed drank the national wine between July 2024 and February 2025. Among consumers, 66% bought at least one bottle in the period analysed.
“Data show that wine is on the rise. Moreover, in the country we are currently making great wine, which contributes to the consumption of the drink. The preference for red wine is on average 60%, but the important thing is to taste the grapes and pair them with the best dish,” says Elia Pontes.
Average per capita wine consumption in Brazil jumped from 1.8 liters in 2019 to 2.7 liters in 2022, and continues this growth trajectory, as shown by estimates from consulting firm IWSR published by Exame.
For the ToutVin specialist, the increase in wine consumption in Brazil has prompted a search for courses and experiences, such as the training launched by ToutVin. “People who love wine are increasingly interested in knowledge and depth about the subject, from how the drink is made, to the best grapes or wines to choose in each situation,” he explains.
“With the Beginner Sommelier course, ToutVin hopes to contribute so that people who already love wine can gain technical knowledge about the drink, as well as the role of sommelier,” concludes Elia Pontis.
