Portugal won its first U-17 World Cup title on Thursday (27), after defeating Austria 1-0, in the match held at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
The only goal in the match was scored by striker Anicio Cabral, Benfica player, the second top scorer in the competition with seven goals. Austrian Johannes Moser, who belongs to Red Bull Salzburg of Austria and is loaned to Levering of Austria, finished as the top scorer among the isolated players with eight goals.
The Portuguese team was responsible for eliminating Brazil from the semi-finals, on penalties, after a 0-0 draw in regular time.
In the struggle for third place, the team ended up losing to the Brazilian team on penalties as well.
Since the competition adopted its current format in 1991, the Brazilian team has won four times, tied with Nigeria as the most winners.
Brazil’s first title came in 1997, in a squad that included Ronaldinho Gaucho.
