The Senate holds a session with the focus on Attorney General Gertz

This afternoon, the Senate began a regular session marked by speculation and rumors pointing to the imminent departure of Prosecutor Alejandro Gertz Manero, who was finishing his duties in January 2028. President Claudia Sheinbaum avoided delving into the issue in her morning press conference, confining herself to acknowledging that she had received a letter from the Senate and that she would analyze it in detail before making a public statement about it on Friday.

The Legislative Council session began more than an hour late and without any official letter from the executive authority or the prosecution appearing in the Parliamentary Gazette explaining the resignation of its owner, Alejandro Gertz. Lawmakers began with the agenda, which includes approving licenses and alternatives in the Senate, and presented various initiatives, but without addressing the big issue. After 90 minutes of discussion, the head of the body, Laura Itzel Castillo, declared the holiday. The session will resume at 2:30 p.m.

After Sheinbaum’s statements, the Political Coordination Body (Gokubo) meeting began in the Senate, where the coordinators of the six groups meet. There, Adan Augusto Lopez, leader of Morena, the majority seat, was expected to report on the document sent to the presidency that supposedly dealt with the management of Gertz Manero at the head of the FGR, the commission launched by President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Amid speculation and rumours, some senators asserted that the document sent by Adan Augusto points out some failures of the FGR in its work, which is regulated by the Senate in accordance with Article 102 of the Constitution.

During the session, Morena’s coordinator, Adan Augusto Lopez, held dialogues with members of his caucus, with some members informally saying that the departure of Gertz Manero was a fact, and even putting forward a name as a possible replacement, that of Ernestina Godoy, President Sheinbaum’s current legal advisor.

“We are waiting, we are aware that it is about this review, we are even waiting for Jocobo to contact us at some point to know in detail the document that the president spoke about and to be able to know what is there about it,” declared Senator Alejandra Parrales of the Citizens’ Movement, which, like the PRI and PAN groups, lacks information about the resignation or dismissal of the Attorney General.

Adding to the tension and confusion due to the contradictory accounts about Gertz Manero’s future was the secrecy of the parliamentary coordinators who left the Jocobo meeting without making statements to the press. In addition, reporters were denied access to the plenary hall, which is normally allowed before the start of regular sessions.

If the Attorney General’s resignation is confirmed, it must be announced before the full Senate and serious reasons discussed. In the event of a resignation, the FGR’s Basic Law establishes a temporary replacement mechanism until a new President is appointed. In principle, responsibility will fall on the Special Prosecutor for Competition Control, Cristina Resendez Durruti.
