On Thursday (27/11), the University of São Paulo (USP) chose its new rector and vice president. The dispute was won by the current Dean of University Studies, Aloysio Augusto Cotrim Segurado, and the professor at the Polytechnic, Lady Ligi Bariani Bernucci. The two represent the USP for People ticket, receiving 1,270 votes.
In second place came the Nossa USP ticket, represented by Ana Lucia Duarte Lana, professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU), and Pedro Vitoriano de Oliveira, professor at the Institute of Chemistry (IQ), with 713 votes.
In third place, with 340 votes, came the USP Novo Tempo ticket, represented by Marcilio Alves, professor at Poli University, and Silvia Pereira de Castro Casa Nova, professor at the Faculty of Economics and Administration (FEA).
The tripartite list will be sent to Governor Tarcisio de Freitas (Republican), who must decide who will be the new rector and vice-rector of USP.
Who is the new dean and vice chancellor of the University of the South Pacific?
Aluisio Segurado received his MD, PhD and Professorship in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases from the Faculty of Medicine (FM) at the University of the South Pacific. He works in research areas related to tropical medicine, global health, vulnerability and care of people living with HIV/AIDS.
Ensured was previously Executive Vice Chancellor for International Relations (2013 to 2014) and Coordinator of the Academic Performance Indicators Management Office (Egida) at the University of the South Pacific (2018 to 2021).
He is currently a full professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Central Institute of the Foundation at Hospital das Clínicas. He is also President of the USP Agency for National and International Cooperation (Aucani) and the Chamber of Educational Activities (CAD).
Liedi Bernucci holds a degree in civil engineering from the University of the South Pacific and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering from the same institution. She completed part of her postgraduate training at ETH in Zurich, Switzerland, where she earned a PhD in Transportation Engineering.
In 1995, he coordinated the University’s Pavement Technology Laboratory and contributed to the establishment of the most complete railway research laboratory in Brazil.
In 2006, Bernucci became a full professor at Poli-USP. She was also head of the Department of Transportation Engineering and director of the École Polytechnique, the first woman to hold these roles.
She also headed the Institute of Technological Research (IPT), of the São Paulo State Government, between 2022 and 2024, and was a member of the Supreme Council of the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (Fapesp).
She is currently a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and was elected in 2025 to the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo (ACIESP).
