Strong temperatures expected on Friday – a maximum of 34 degrees Celsius – combined with high humidity are expected to lead to the formation of areas of instability.
On Thursday afternoon (27), the Standing Committee for Emergency Action (Copae) held an extraordinary meeting to harmonize preventive measures after the Civil Defense of Porto Alegre issued a yellow warning for the risk of hail. The meeting was called after analyzing the weather conditions that indicate the possibility of the phenomenon occurring between late morning and afternoon on Friday (28).
According to the Civil Defense Monitoring and Alert Center (Cemadec) and the Catavento Meteorologia e Meio Ambiente, the expected strong warming – a maximum of 34°C – combined with high humidity would encourage the formation of areas of instability. This scenario increases the possibility of the formation of convective cores capable of causing scattered hailstones, in addition to rapid cumulative rain showers of about 10 mm, electrical discharges, and wind gusts approaching speeds of 50 km/h.
At the meeting, teams of municipalities, states and partner institutions strengthened their readiness to monitor and ultimately provide assistance to residents. Although the warning is at level yellow — indicating concern rather than alert — hail remains the primary concern, due to its potential to cause damage to vulnerable vehicles, surfaces and structures.
Population guidelines
Civil Defense recommended that residents follow updates throughout the day, avoid exposure to them during periods of instability, and seek safe shelter in the event of heavy rain or hail. Surveillance is still active by Simadic. Emergency cases can be reported by calling 199.
