São Paulo witnessed one of the most tragic nights in recent decades this Thursday (27). At the Maracanã, Tricolor lost 6-0 to Fluminense, in a match where everything went wrong. In addition to the worst result in the Brazilian League in 24 years, the club no longer has a chance to qualify for the Libertadores Cup via the Brazilian League.
Coach Hernan Crespo considered that the team did not deserve the result. The Argentine commented that his team controlled the opponent from the first arrival and did not find himself on the field. But the technician believes that the result came to speed up the operations that must be implemented for the next year.
He pointed out: “We did not deserve to go through this, the fans did not deserve this. We cannot play like this. We found a team that won a penalty, scored a goal at the first attempt and we could not do anything. They played well and what happened, it was a perfect storm. Now what will happen, a result like today can speed things up, and planning for next year, we have a lot of things to improve, and we have already listed them.”
Financial situation
Crespo indicated that upon his arrival, the board of directors informed him that there was no money to hire new employees. The coach revealed that the idea was to save the team from the possible relegation that was imminent after the Club World Cup stopped. Now, the Argentine hopes that conditions will be better for 2026.
“The board has told me since I arrived that they don’t have the money, that they won’t hire and that we have to save ourselves. We are planning for the future, but I have to be clear about what we can do. I have clear ideas, and I trust what they said, that by December there won’t be any money and that things could suddenly improve in January.”
Continuity in São Paulo
Even with the defeat, the coach maintains his intention to stay at the club until 2026. Crespo believes he can be part of the solution necessary for the club to have better days. Furthermore, the coach noted that he had been talking for some time about the need for reconstruction within Tricolor.
“The idea is to continue and plan for the future, because I have to believe and trust, because I want the best for São Paulo and I believe I can be part of it and be the solution. Trusting that things will happen, so it’s part of my life. I can’t explain why I have so much love for São Paulo, but it is the way it is and I try to help. When the board thinks I can’t help, I will leave or get fired for the second time.” Sao Paulo,” he commented.
As a player I was like that, I tried to win everywhere and as a coach I was like that too, I was one of the few who won on three different continents, so I can be part of the solution. The idea now is to rebuild. “I have spoken in many press conferences about the need for changes, because it would be easy to talk after a defeat like this, but the reality of Sao Paulo today is that it needs to improve.”
